Huck de Singleton

Back

We can find no records of Huck de Singleton owning any land in Thornton to date.  His son and heir Ughtred however did, so we have decided to include him.
Huck (Huccas, Fuccas) de Singleton was born c1100 in Little Singleton, Lancashire .  It is highly likely that he was the son of Siward de Singleton (FitzDunning) and Helga de Kevelioc.  The 'Fitz' in the second names means son of, so FitzUghtred means son of Ughtred.

From the documents available Henry FitzSiward/Henry de Lathom is the son of Siward FitzDunning and he had a brother named Huck.  This by no means definately proves the link but with Huck having a son named Siward, it seems highly likely.

Huck de Singleton held the 'serjeantry' of Little Singleton from which he took his name.  Under the feudal system serjeantry was a form of holding land in return for some specific service.

Huck is referred to as Huck the reeve and also as chief bailiff.  A reeve was a town official who supervised land and workers for the Lord of the Manor.  Reeves were overseen by Shire Reeves, the predecessor to Sherrifs, and they in turn were overseen by the Constable.

Huck de Singleton died sometime after 1170 in Broughton, Preston.  His son and heir was Ughtred de Singleton.
